100% Merlot from 20-year-old vineyards in Nieva, Castilla y León (Spain) on grey slate soils. The wine is made without destemming, with gentle stirring and aeration at the beginning of fermentation to preserve the delicate floral aromas. It is aged in Burgundian oak barrels, which gives it depth, structure and complexity. The result is a natural, red, quiet wine, intense and well-structured - ideal for lovers of characterful wines with a strong personality.

Welcome to the República Independiente del Verdejo under the leadership of President Ismael Gozal! Ismael represents the fifth generation of winemakers in the municipality of Nieva in the Segovia region. The vineyards are dominated by sandy soil (along with clay, slate, limestone and pebbles) and pine forest around the bushes. The vineyards are located at an altitude of between 800-900 meters and are managed ecologically with as little intervention as possible. They have never come into contact with any chemicals. The oldest vineyards are around 270 years old, but the old ladies are still in pretty good shape!  
Ismael follows a biodynamic calendar to balance the activities in the field and in the cellar. Originally, Ismael worked at the family winery Viñedos de Nieva, but wanted to go his own way and experiment with organic wines on his own. Voila - in 1998, the Microbio wines winery was born. Initially as a side project, in 2004 he fully embarked on natural wines, having quickly gained recognition with his lively, terroir-focused Verdeja wines. Ismael works with two product lines. Ismael Gozalo wines are more "classic" with a small amount of sulfite added during bottling. The Microbio wines mostly contain absolutely no added sulfur. All wines are spontaneously fermented, unfiltered and not fining.
