In 2001, New Zealand native Tom Lubbe founded the Domaine Matassa winery in the southernmost region of France, on the border with Spain. In the Roussillon region, he grows the typical varieties of this region: Macabeu, Grenache Gris, Carignan and Grenache. All this at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level and with a very low production of around 3,500 kg per hectare. Everything is processed by hand. Apart from a small amount of SO2 used after fermentation, no other additives are added to the wines.
Since 2003, they have been farming in a biodynamicbiodynamic regime. Tom Lubbe recently moved the winery to the village of Montner, about 10 kilometers to Calce, but the vineyards have of course remained in their original location.
