This is no longer “just” Chardonnay. This is liquid time. After 84 months of aging, Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes 2018 feels almost unbelievably alive. Seven years on the lees, minimal intervention, zero winemaking gymnastics — and yet an energy that keeps you going from the first sniff to the endless salty finish. In the glass, there are buttery brioche, dried lemon, baked apple, hazelnuts, fine smoke and wet stone after rain. But it’s all tight, precise and vibrant. No tired oxidation. More like a grand cru Chardonnay from a parallel universe where Burgundy met Jura and stopped dealing with ego. This will hurt all lovers of great white wines. And at the same time, it will excite anyone looking for something outside the classic prestige boxes. The grapes come from old bushes planted around 1919. Ganevat works biodynamically, ferments spontaneously and lets the wine mature on the lees in demi-muids for an extremely long time without unnecessary intervention and often without added sulfur. It is those 84 months of elevage that give the wine enormous depth and at the same time a special calm. Ideally open slowly. A large glass, a carafe, an evening without rushing. And with butter chicken, lobster, comté or just silence. A wine that doesn't feel like a product. More like an archive report from another planet.

Jean-François Ganevat and his sister Anne come from a family of winemakers with a long tradition. Fanfan, as his friends call him, together with his sister Anne, farm almost 10 hectares of vineyards in the village of Rotalier in the south of Jura. More specifically - Fanfan takes care of the wine, Anne takes care of the viticulture. They mainly grow Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot noir, Trousseau and Pulsard. Fanfán and Anne have been operating in a biodynamic regime since 2006. Some of the vineyards even date back to 1902 and 1919. Jean-François apprenticed and worked at Domaine Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet in his youth.

Fanfan's goal is to highlight the terroir, grape variety and winemaking style. With less than 10 hectares of his own vineyards, he has very low wine yields. Combined with the huge demand for his wines, their shortage has arisen. Francois and Anne decided to solve this precarious situation with so-called "negos" grapes. Negos means that they buy grapes from their friends from Burgundy, Jura and Alsace, who respect their vision of natural wine. Fanfan "turns" the grapes into wine himself in Rotalier and gives them the same care as his own grapes.
