Barranco Oscuro

Brand's website: Barranco Oscuro

Manuel Valenzuela and his son Lorenzo farm several hectares of vines in the Alpujarras, the hills between the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean. They are champions of indigenous varieties and produce wines of breathtaking purity and precision.

Manuel was born in Grenada and moved to France as an adult to escape the regime. He returned to the Alpujarras in the late 1970s and bought Barranco Oscuro in 1979. The area was once heavily planted with vines and was a major wine producer before it was decimated by phylloxera. Farmers mostly planted almond trees rather than risk the vines.

When Manuel bought the farm, he kept many of the almond trees but began replanting the vineyards with some of the old indigenous varieties - Tempranillo, Garnacha and Vigiriega. At first he sold grapes to a local cooperative, but in the mid-nineties he started producing wine. At the same time, in the spirit of experimentation and in cooperation with a local university, he planted some international varieties - Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Vermentino, Riesling and others.

The farm now operates on 12 hectares of vines at an altitude of approximately 1300 meters above sea level, planted in slate soil. The vineyards are only 10 km from the Mediterranean Sea with a very special microclimate and are ideal for working without chemicals in the vineyard. Barranco Oscuro still works like this from the beginning - completely naturally. The combination of skilled vineyard management, winemaking, climate and terroir makes Barranco Oscuro wines so exceptional. A place from which you feel you could see Africa on a clear day!
